Small cream forty-eight shilling currency note
decorated with garland pattern to three edges, 48s to each corner. In ink
pen at top '607', inscription reads 'State of the Massachusetts Bay Nov.r
17.1776/ the possessor of this shall/be paid by the treasurer of/this state,
forty-eight shillings/lawfull money, the se/venth day of Decmr 1781 which/
bill shall be received for the/ aforesaid sum in all payments/at the
treasury, and in all other payments; by, order of the General/Assembly/.'
Signed in inkpen 'J Goodwin'. to reverse forty-eight shillings, drawing of a
soldier with surrounding words 'issued in defence of American liberty enfe
petit placidam sub libertate quietem Novemr 17 1776.' The note is also
stamped with the Percy half moon crest below a crown in red. |
